Testimonies from Love In Action Outreach - 02/25/2014

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hello Everyone,

We wanted to share some testimonies from our night out on Tuesday. It has been the most incredible yet =) Thank you for the prayers and also for the donations. Almost everything we took was given away!! I think we are left with a couple of bars of soap =)

Please bear with the long email...here are testimonies of some people we met:

-Joe (found him sitting on bench). He is an older man (late sixties maybe), We've seen him before. He's normally slightly hunched over but will turn his head to the side to look up at you when you talk to him. We learned he helps run newsstands throughout the city (primarily at 18th and Market). He asked for prayer not to lose his faith & for release from fear and uncertainty about the future. He told us he "wears" uncertainty like clothing!

-Lawrence (on bench next to Joe)

-Antoine- young man, asked for prayer for family unity--some of his family members support him and others do not

-Tony - pain in his knees and back, addiction to alcoholism. Was open to prayer, we got to pray with him a few times. Talked a lot about feeling betrayed by those closest to him.

-Dan & his brother

-John

-Freddie-One word of knowledge we got before starting to go out that night was that we would meet someone with pain in their left knee. While ministering to people we would ask if they had pain....Freddie had met one of our team members just a few days before. When he saw her that evening...he came over to talk to her. It turns out he had pain in his left knee. He had had an accident 12 years ago. He talked about being in pain and that he had done a lot of walking that day; so we asked him if we could pray for him. He agreed.  After praying once...he tested his leg out but said the pain was still there. We prayed a second time....when we were finished...he had tears in his eyes. He said he felt tingles over his body. He tried his leg out again...and said it was much better!  He began to share his faith with us and that he had been to church that day...he was such a blessing.

-Donald - Jewish attorney (not homeless!) We saw him pacing as he waited for his train, but he looked like he had back trouble. We approached him and struck a conversation...he shared that he feels like his relationship with his family is based solely on money/ seemed to use humor to mask his pain,  turns out he did have back problems. He wondered if he was really loved by those near him... When we asked to pray for him, surprisingly he agreed. As we began to pray - his back spasmed! He had to rush off after that to catch his train, we got to share with him that he is highly valued by God and believe a seed was planted.

-Gabriel- from Burma, 28 years old, kept saying "God is with me" but didn't want to be prayed for, spends time at the library, is trying to save enough money to get back home to Burma. Seemed closed when he first came over but gradually opened up some.

-Angel - met him right after Gabriel (interesting!). He had rheumatoid arthritis and had pain all over his body. He had been praying earlier that day...his socks were wet and his ankles were swollen. He was planning to sleep outside that night but knew it was going to be very cold...He saw us walk by and turn a corner. He decided to get up from where he was and come see what was going on. He said he walked around the corner with his cane & saw us praying for people, he said he felt the the pain leave his body (!!)  threw his cane to the side and began walking around, he showed great faith. He also said he has deteriorating eyesight but when he reads the Bible he can see perfectly! We got to share several tracts with him which he was happy about, he said he had been asking God for something to read. He got new socks (2 pairs!!), a heavy blanket and we had one last pair of mens shoes which fit him perfectly...and which he had managed to put on himself (something he said he shouldn't have been able to do...let alone without his cane!)...he was beaming with excitement and kept strutting around in his new shoes, walking completely unassisted...YAY Jesus!!

-Dwayne- we found him sitting on a sleeping bag, offered him some food and some supplies. When we asked him if he needed prayer for anything...he said for greater faith....and also for his feet which bleed from time to time.  We prayed with him and immediately afterwards he said he felt tingling and heat in his feet!!!

Helene - while we were praying for Dwayne, one of us got a word of knowledge about pain in the lower back. We asked Dwayne if he had pain there...he said no...it turns out one person on our team was experiencing lower back pain. We got to pray with her and she felt heat come into her lower back and the pain lift. God is so good!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill - While the last 4 testimonies above were happening...someone we had prayed for before (Bill) came over and was watching what was happening. We had prayed for him the last time we were out...he had been using a cane and felt 65% better when we had prayed then. It turns out he no longer uses a cane and has no pain anymore (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) He was amazed by what he was seeing happening....we encouraged him that he too could pray for others to be healed as he was healed if he has faith....initially he said he had little faith and doubted he could but we got to encourage him some more..and he walked away believing something positive would work out for him and that his life would improve

Lady and a guy - was bitter about her sister who stole her identity, didn't want prayer and wasn't ready to forgive. They walked away...the guy was quiet and didn't say much...but seemed to agree with her...we didn't get their names...=(

-Green - We saw him the last time we were out. We got to pray for him for his situation to improve..

-Bruce- Met him during an outreach in January by the Free Library steps..he had pain his feet because he was wearing shoes that were the wrong size. He told us this time..that after that day when we'd prayed with him...about 2 days later someone gave him a pair of shoes that fit!!!!!!! Interestingly....he was the one who recognised us...and reminded us that we had prayed for him and told us the testimony..!!!!!!

Please continue to pray for these people and the many others we met that the seeds planted will bear fruit..!

With love,

Love in Action Team

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

This morning I just finished Deuteronomy 34, the last chapter of the “Pentateuch”, also known as the Book of Moses. Having saturated myself in the life of Moses during the last two months, when I get to the end of his life, I feel a little emotional. It’s like I am reading about a friend dying.

Just before Moses died he left the Israelites a special blessing (found in Deut. 33). Something stood out to me in verse 16, which I never considered before. Moses speaking to the tribe of Joseph, prays they would be blessed “with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush” (33:16). Notice here, Moses recalls his experience at the burning bush! As you remember, the call of God started at the bush in the desert over 40 years earlier (see Exodus 3).

In those many years of ups and downs, victories and defeats, joys and tears, Moses never forgot his calling. He “hung in there”! No greater compliment of Moses can be given than the words of Scripture from Hebrews 3:2 “Moses was faithful in all God’s house.” As I pondered and studied the life and ministry of Moses, I realized he endured a lot of trials and tests. He   persevered through it all because he was anchored in the Lord and always treasured the call of God on his life. My prayer for all of us is that we never forget the call of the Lord on our lives, and, no matter what happens, remain faithful. The One who called us is able to keep us and to accomplish his work through us. God bless you!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Last Sunday I preached about “What We Need to Know About Success”. From the Scriptures, I see that a huge part of success is experienced through perseverance and daily progress. This Sunday, the message on my heart is from the Book of Joshua and entitled, “Advancing in Your Faith”. Joshua boldly led God’s people out of the desert and into the promised land. God has a “promised land” for you and me…one of conquering sin and experiencing the presence of the Lord and the Spirit’s peace and joy. This message will help you (as it has helped me) to make progress every day by “fighting the good fight of faith.” I believe this message is extremely relevant…the most important one I have spoken here yet! Pray and come with faith in Jesus. May the presence and power of Jesus change our lives!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Ninety five years seems like a long time. However, if you could ask Willard Cook he would tell you it seemed so brief. Willard, who walked 95 years on this earth, is now with Jesus in the beginning of his eternity! Do you want to live a long life? A long life sounds good to me,   however, I would rather live a shorter life with blessing and quality than a longer life with pain and problems.

While reading Deuteronomy, I see the heart of God for his own children. He wants to not only give us longevity of life, but many years we can enjoy! This doesn’t just “happen”. A person blessed by God knows the importance of loving and keeping God’s Word. In truth, God’s blessing and our obedience are never far apart. Notice what Moses says to the Israelites in Deut. 6:2, “so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.” The Israelites hearing Moses, could say, “yes, I know that already.” However, living right with God is not a matter of what we know, but how we respond to the Lord in what we know. May our hearts be soft and tender, humbly receiving his reminders so that we may walk in the fear of the Lord all the day long. Only then, will we comprehend the joyful life God intended for us.

What is success? It’s hard to see to the bottom of success as we look through the murky waters of our culture. Instead of letting others try to define success “their way”, why not look to the Lord and His Word? They may be transferring him to another hospital so we are waiting to find out where he is. We will send an update when we know.

She asked that we be praying for him.

Thank you and God bless.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hello everyone,

Hope you are keeping warm and safe out there. We have lots to share !!
Just a reminder that we will be meeting this Saturday at 3pm to minister to the homeless in center city. If you are able to join us, please do.

We are testing a new method again this week. Please note our new meeting location. We will be meeting at 3:00 pm at Cafe Cret (located on the Parkway at 110 N 16th St, Philadelphia, PA). We will leave from Cafe Cret promptly at 3:15pm and go out to minister to the homeless until 5pm. We will reconvene briefly at Cafe Cret before we end of the day. We will have food ready to distribute ahead of time and ask for anyone coming out to come with backpack to use to carry supplies. We're still testing a new approach =)

We want to share some testimonies and prayer requests from the last time we went out (Tuesday night Feb 4).

1. We encountered several people, many of whom we have encountered before. Here is a list of a few of them, please keep them in your prayers and pray for God to turn their lives around. We were out ministering in the evening last week, and I was surprised to see that some people were still sleeping outside in this weather...

-Man of peace (forgot his name) - peace transcends understanding- message for him, said he had already been thinking about it earlier in the day

-Dupree (compassionate guy who when asked if he had anything we could pray with him about, asked for prayer for 2 friends of his - Doris and Tommy )

- Max -guy who lives in GA and is here in Philly working, he likes to go to people in the suburban station and speak positive words over them, felt that maybe he was a Christian, he needs prayer for a rekindling in his relationship with his wife who lives in Georgia,

- Kevin

- Angela -lost her son (Kayir - been taken into care, Angela seemed very young and under the influence of some type of substance) We have seen her before.

- Bill- 65% healing in his back (we prayed with him and he felt the pain in his back lifting)

- Chubby- Stephanie- one of us gave away our Bible to her, she wanted to know where to find Ten Commandments and Psalm 23. We found her sitting alone, on the floor in the station.

-Sammy- emphysema was healed previously (one of us had gotten a word of knowledge before we went out on the streets that day about meeting someone called Samuel who had issues with his lungs). Felt the Lord was highlighting him to us, he seemed to know the homeless community around him, seemed like a crucial part of the network. Sammy also asked for pants - larger than a size 30.

-Joseph -opened his hands up for us to pray, very receptive, back and knee problems (the Lord highlighted back pain to us as we prayed with him, when we asked him if he was suffering from lower back pain, he was surprised and asked how we knew.)

-Jonathan (met 2 different guys by this name - pray for their situations to improve)
(one of them asked for prayer for a friend of his called Dreadlock whom he said believed he'd been cursed and wasn't in a right state of mind)

-Michelle- had lived on a ship several years ago, suffering from lung issues. We found her standing by a bus stop, expressed pain in her heart from the death of her husband several years ago from lung problems. As we prayed with her, the Lord highlighted pain in her right leg....when asked if she had pain there, she said she did, that had caused her to fall on her face earlier that week. She was wearing suglasses - and showed us her bruised eye). We got to pray for her, interestingly though, as we started to pray, she started yelling abuse at people passing by... possibly manifesting...
Gospel choir guy - part of a trio who sing/busk at suburban station and also at the gallery.
Steve- mental issues

Tatiana

There were others we met too but I can't recall their names. Please pray for these...

2. Also, there are a few things we could use for this Saturday (and on a continual basis if you're able to donate):

- Soap (Irish Spring is a massive hit among most people we met - the preferred choice over Dial)

- Toothpaste/toothbrushes

- Deodorant

- Reusable bags

- gloves

- hats

- wipes

- wash clothes

- feminine hygiene

- nail clippers

- socks

- underwear

- blankets

Hope to see you Saturday. Please let me know ahead of time if you are coming, so we will know to expect you. We will leave Cafe Cret promptly at 3:15pm to start walking the streets..

Stay warm and safe out there.

Much love!!

Roland (267-632-3232) and Thecla (267-265-8178)

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

While reading 1 Timothy this morning something stood out to me. This letter, written by Paul to his son in the faith, Timothy, contains both encouragement and challenges. We find teachings about good doctrine, good behavior, as well as warnings concerning false teachers. In the midst of this important “stuff”, Paul stopped…and poured his heart out in spontaneous praise and worship. He exclaimed, “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen” (1:17).

To me, this shows the intensely personal walk Paul had with Jesus. Right doctrine and right practice, important as they are, can never substitute for loving and worshipping Jesus for who He is…the great Savior and Lord! In the midst of your busy day, do you sometimes lift your soul to God and simply worship? Praise and worship was never meant to be a Sunday morning segment on an “order of service”.

Let’s hit the streets with our praise! After all, “the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). Creation belongs to him so we should, “Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens” (Psalm 150:1). There is no better time to worship than the  present. Why not stop reading and lift your heart to Jesus right now, thanking Him and exalting Him? If you’re not sure what to say, try quoting Revelation 5:12 “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise”!

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

Friday, February 07, 2014

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Lately, we seem to have one storm chasing after the previous one! This week God has been speaking to my heart a message I will preach this Sunday called, “Two Storms…One God.” How do we know what to do when we are in a “life-storm”? What can we learn from others who successfully responded to these storms? I am really excited about this message because I can envision how this is going to help a lot of people right now! Without doubt, this is going to be the most important message I have ever spoken here! Pray and come with faith. May the presence and power of Jesus change our lives.

God bless,

Pastor Mark
