“Following Jesus and Loving People”

A young person shared with me about the three greatest fears of youth  today. I was especially surprised at the third. Here they are: the fear of death, the fear of public speaking…and the fear of silence. Our culture encourages people to cultivate a constant stream of noise. A TV is always in the background at home, the radio is always on in the car, the ear buds are in when walking around. Why are we so afraid of silence? Could it be that silence increases our anxiety as we are forced to face issues which need attention? Men in prison have told me the worst time for them is at night while in their bed trying to fall asleep. That is when the volume knob of past failures is turned up and becomes a deafening, sleep depriving, roar. So, in order to deaden the reminders of responsibility or past mistakes, we opt for “activity” and noise of any kind.  Silence and stillness, however, should not be our enemy. In fact, silence can benefit us greatly and become the special discipline through which we learn to hear God speaking. The Psalmist challenges us to, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes” Psalm 37:7. Learning to wait before the Lord is a great way for God to show us both our need…and his grace. He never reminds us about past failures to condemn us, but to free us through his forgiveness. If we try to avoid our issues by cluttering our ears with constant sounds, we miss the peace which could be ours. Being still also disciplines our heart to overcome “fretting”. We all know what it is to obsess over something we perceive as not going right in life, and continually pushing the replay button in our mind. As we present  ourselves before God and quiet our heart, we are given God’s power and perspective. Exalting God, rather than exalting our problems, creates room in our hearts for faith and hope to overcome fretting and worry. While others may think of silence as something to avoid, the godly person embraces waiting before God as renewing and reviving. “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” Psalm 27:14.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

A few weeks ago I was speaking with someone who has a relative with Alzheimer’s disease. She explained that little by little the memories of this person were being erased, making them unable to remember past events and relationships. To recall past events is vital to our health. God knows about the power of remembrance and continually challenged and commanded his people to remember him and the great things he has done. Before entering the promised land, the people of God received a message from God through Moses, which takes up most of the Book of Deuteronomy. Of the 231 times “remember” is mentioned in the Bible, Deuteronomy contains more occurrences (16) than any other book. For example, Moses said, “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands” (Deut. 8:2). On our journey today, we are to “dip into the past” to benefit us in the present. We can’t live in the past or dwell on former experiences, as if there were some “ideal time” with which to compare the present. So, when God commands us to remember, he is challenging us to   deliberately call to mind his faithfulness and steadfast character…that we might reciprocate devotion and faithfulness to him. As people connected with Highway Mission Tabernacle, we stand in awe as we consider the amazing faithfulness of God down through the years!  To those of you who have been past members and adherents of Highway, we say THANK YOU for your unique investment in this church and city.  Your presence today is a great encouragement to Highway and Resurrection Life as we attempt to, “Honor the past and change the future.” We deeply respect and rejoice in your faithfulness to the Lord and this church. With the foundation of such a great heritage, we commit ourselves today to trust and obey God for the future he envisions for his church!

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

This morning, I heard a friend of mine share about a secret of ministry which develops “staying power”. She spoke about the Word of God as seeds. Although small and unseen by most, seeds contain the power of life and will bear fruit at the right time. The actions of faithful obedience on our part deposits those seeds into the hearts of others. Sometimes, we get discouraged because we don’t see the immediate “cause-effect” dynamic. As I was painting at the church the other day, I realized how manual labor and ministry are so different. After painting a wall, I stepped back and admired the immediate change for the good. Ministry, however, takes great faith because the change is hardly ever right away. Seeds take time. However, waiting is not wasted time. Through love and prayer we water and weed around the seed. Our faith stands on the truth that God will give the increase. He declared, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11. A now deceased preacher and teacher lived by a “philosophy of life” which he repeated to his students (and anyone who would listen). He said, “Live every day in the light of eternity.” God is not asking us to “do it all”. We simply plant the seeds. The harvest will come and some of it will only be known later when we are in heaven. While we are here, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9
