“Following Jesus and Loving People”

As we approach Labor Day and a new season I want to share with you a message God has placed on my heart. When we consider Labor Day we think of work, which for most of us is a dizzying combination of satisfaction and insanity! Not having any work is a pain all its own. On Sunday morning I will share with you about a man who got stuck in a “dead end” job, but who chose to pray, to have a good attitude, and to do the right thing. You will be amazed at what happened next. See you in God’s house and come expecting!

Pastor Mark Boucher

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Do you notice how sometimes faith and circumstances seem to do battle in our minds? We believe what God said in His Word and we believe in what God speaks to our hearts, but sometimes the “facts” of live test our faith. We read in 1 Kings of the showdown between Elijah and the false prophets. At the end of the day, Elijah predicted to the king of Israel (Ahab), “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain” (1 Kings 18:41). This was a bold prophecy since it had not rained in Israel for over 2 years. After saying this, Elijah went to the top of the mountain, bowed to the ground and prayed. Then he sent his  assistant to look at the skies. “There is nothing there, he (the assistant) said” (v.43). Imagine if Elijah declared, “I quit because I don’t see anything   happening”! The Bible says, “Seven times Elijah said, Go back” (v. 43).        Yesterday I read a quote which said, “Circumstances don’t change the Word of God. Our confidence is in Christ – not us.” Don’t let empty skies send you home discouraged. We believe in God who keeps his promises and declares, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Gal. 6:9). Keep “going back” to Jesus, to his Word, to    prayer, and to faithful living. Our Lord will fulfill His Word in your life. May you have the boldness and perseverance to “go back”…to trust in what he says, in spite of empty circumstances. God rewards faith!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Signs are everywhere. We just returned last Saturday from a week away in   Massachusetts and as I travelled, I wondered how many billboard signs we could have counted from MA to PA…hundreds, thousands?  Most of these signs I simply ignored and some I gave a passing glance.  But on my vacation there was one sign that really blessed me. Maybe you can figure it out from this passage…“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” Romans 1:20. On my birthday (last Friday) I had the opportunity to go out on the ocean and do some fishing (Plymouth Bay). The weather was amazing. The sky was blue with puffy clouds. The water was a bluish green. The shoreline was lined with majestic trees and rugged rocks. All this was God’s sign! He reminds us each day that it all belongs to him and he is greater beyond our imagination! The Word tells us, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters” Psalms 24:1-2. All signs have something in common: they get us to imagine and think about what is beyond the sign. To see a sign and pull over and park at the sign is to miss the point. When I see God’s creation, I recognize this is merely a sign of God’s greatness and his character. Creation is for us to enjoy, not to take us away from the    Creator. Love and worship the sign-maker! And if you think His work around you is beautiful now, just wait and see what’s ahead!

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The Holy Spirit and Fire

Near the end of his life, Moses warned the Israelites that the God we serve is a consuming fire. (Deuteronomy 4:24). This description is interesting for its      contrast to Moses’ first encounter with God, whom Moses sees in a fiery bush that is not consumed.

Fire is an amazing thing.  It can heat a house, but it can also burn that house to the ground.  It can provide light for the eyes or blind them.  The same fire that melts butter hardens clay.  How fitting a symbol for the Holy Spirit is fire, which we must embrace with a healthy fear.

The consuming fire to which Moses referred is the fire of a jealous God. Moses tells the Israelites that God will not tolerate a return to idols when the people enter the Promised Land.  This warning is applied to the Christian church and our promised rest when it is quoted in Hebrews:

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”  Hebrews 12:29

The presence of the Holy Spirit in us is to be as it was with the burning bush – a fire ever burning, its fuel never consumed. At the same time, it is the fire of a jealous God that burns within us; a fire that consumes every idol in our spirit that asserts itself against God.

Although the Holy Spirit’s power is limitless, his power in our lives is subject to our free will and our choices.  As Paul points out, we have the power to quench the gift of Holy Spirit (I Thessalonians 5:19) or to fan it into flames (II Timothy 1:6). Will you choose today to welcome God’s consuming fire into every aspect of your life?
