“Following Jesus and Loving People”

There are Issues and there are issues. Why do so many of us worry more about the  issues (small “i”) and overlook the major ones? As people with many daily responsibilities, we need to learn to discern which issues to address, and which to ignore, and which to deal with later. We can’t do everything we want or all that we are asked to do, so we need wisdom to pick and choose. Everything we say yes to means that we say no to something else. If we say yes to assorted minor issues while neglecting the most important, we experience troubled minds filled with anxiety. Jesus told a story about someone who received God’s Word into their lives. However, the Word made no lasting impact because of “the   worries of this life and the deceitfulness of riches” that choked the fruit. Sadly, many go through their whole life bouncing frantically from one minor issue to another and never find answers to the major questions…like “why am I here?” and “what does God want in my life?”

God’s Word gives us the remedy for anxiety. Psalms 55:22 says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” Commit your life to the Lord, always directing your heart to love and obey him. As the cares of life come, turn them over to the Lord in prayer. Believe that God will take care of you and your issues as you simply trust him and seek him. This doesn’t mean we sit back and do nothing. Through our relationship with the Lord, we learn to take action on the major responsibilities as well as deal with life’s everyday minor issues. He teaches us to build order and discipline into our daily schedules. Becoming a follower of Jesus means learning how to manage and overcome the worries of life. Now, that’s a big issue!

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

My Sister-in law reminded me of something I haven’t thought about in a while. We were discussing those who are the most effective disciples and workers in God’s kingdom and the qualities they possess. She said, “I look for those who are F.A.T…faithful, available, and teachable. How true! In my reading through the Psalms, I pondered some verses from Psalms 25 which emphasize the    importance of being teachable.

“Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths…” 25:4

“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” 25:9

“Who then, is the man that fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way chosen for him.” 25:12

The principle remains: those who are good leaders first must become good  followers. Jesus instructed his disciples, “come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19).  As we keep our hearts soft and remain open to the Lord’s correction and guidance, we become leadership material. It all starts with our inner life in right relation to our Lord. He wants to use our lives to grow   wonderful fruit and is looking for those who are humble enough to fear him and learn his ways. Are you willing to become F.A.T.?

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

You know what it’s like. For a second you hear that small voice say, “don’t say that”…but you go ahead and blurb it out anyway. And, after the words are spoken, you wish you could reach out and stuff them back in your mouth!

This Sunday I am speaking a message called, “His Spirit in Your House”! How do we learn to make the Holy Spirit “comfortable” living inside us? How can avoid grieving him? Because, if He’s not happy than I’m certainly not happy.

If you can, come a little early and join us for prayer in the fellowship hall (gym). Pray for the Lord to continue moving by His Spirit in our midst. The hour is too late and the cost is too high to slack off now. Come with faith and expect Jesus to meet with us!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers and Spiritual Mothers!

Abraham Lincoln once said, “I remember my mother’s prayers, and they have always followed me, they have clung to me all my life.”

As I reflect on today being Mother’s Day, I am reminded of my own mother, who is the definition of a godly, selfless woman and mother. As I look over my life,  I am reminded that I would not be who I am and be in the place of ministry that I am today, if it had not been for my mother and the example that she laid before me. My brothers, sisters, and I always knew that mom was praying for us whether it was because we had an earache, had a broken heart, were taking a big test, were working an overnight shift and had to drive home on snowy roads, or were flying across the ocean to an unknown land.

I am so thankful that God allowed me the honor of being raised by a God-fearing mother. We did not have excess growing up, but the one thing that we did have was the love, discipline, and teaching from a godly mother. My mother has always been a woman who was not afraid to let us know that she was praying for and supporting us, who showed through action what it meant to live unselfishly, and who would point us to Jesus at the most pivotal points of our lives. Because of her example, perseverance, prayers, tears, and hard work her children not only know Jesus, but are serving him today.

So I challenge you, what legacy are you leaving behind for your children? What are the things for which you will be remembered? Will you be remembered for wanting to have a clean house or for the time you took to make memories with your children and point them to Jesus? There is nothing greater that my mother could have given me than a rich heritage in Jesus, and there is nothing greater that you can give your child/children than giving them Jesus and being a godly example.

I want to leave you with this verse from Proverbs 31

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised..

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

Monday, May 5, 2014

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Expectations are huge. If you enter something new in life and your expectations are unrealistically high (more fantasy than reality), then you set yourself up for disappointment. For example, someone says, “If I just get this job, then life will be great”, or “If I can just get married, I know my life will turn from sad to happy.” When we place our faith and expectations on the circumstances or other      people, we can become “disillusioned”.

We were created to experience our fulfillment in the Lord. I have witnessed some new Christians excited about their new journey because they thought life would be one continuous “spiritual party” with no problems or trials. Let’s make no mistake…Jesus changes our lives infinitely for the better! However, he warned us many times that following him would present special trials and tests in the world. He promised strength, grace, and his constant presence, but never promised an easy, comfortable life. As we look at the life of Jesus, we see him filled with great joy in the midst of many difficulties. And, as we look through the Word, we realize the importance of faith and perseverance, understanding that these qualities can only grow in the soil of hardships. So, when it comes to   expectations, let’s look for our contentment to Jesus alone, and consider other people and the good things that come to us in life as blessings for which to be thankful. And, let us put our spiritual armor on each day…expecting life to    challenge us with issues that battle our souls.

Paul told the Ephesians, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Eph. 6:10-11). God is always good, even when life is hard!

Victory over the old life! This is the message I will be sharing this Sunday morning at 10:00am. We all know the battles that war within and the struggles with the old nature. Often, these battles rage because we allow “strongholds” of dark thoughts to attack our “walls” and set up camp within us. Thank God, Jesus has provided truth and power over all darkness! Let’s explore together how we can defeat these strongholds and enjoy our life with Jesus. This Sunday’s message is the second in our three week series on “Change That Lasts”.  Come praying and expecting for chains to be broken and all to be set free by the truth of God’s Word!

Pastor Mark

“JUST JESUS” MEETING—Join us Sunday evening, 6:00 PM, at Highway Tabernacle for a time of praise and worship. We will take time to just seek Jesus through music, prayer, the Word and drawing closer to Him.
