“Following Jesus and Loving People”

In our day of twenty second commercials and expansive mass marketing, it’s easy to look at something quickly and turn away saying…next. Sometimes, we as believers do this when God speaks to us. Instead of listening attentively to the Spirit’s message, we are already running ahead to the next thing.

This past Sunday we enjoyed the ministry of Jason and Laura Jablonski. The big question is: what did God say to us through them? Will we hear and seek the Lord to bring about the needed change in us and in our churches? Here is what I believe God spoke to us: First, our God will provide for us through the dry places. The widow of Elijah’s day feared that the supply would run out. God challenged her to first give by faith to God’s prophet, and then she would experience his provision. “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land” (1 Kings 17:14). As we seek the Lord and his kingdom first, and he will supply all we need! God is faithful.

Secondly, the Lord spoke to us about “coming rain”.  The Lord hears our prayers, sees our outreach, and will bring about a harvest. The ground may seem hard, but there is rain in the forecast! The Lord’s answer to Elijah’s prayer came after seven times of asking…and then appeared as only a small cloud. Small beginnings are God’s specialty. To human eyes, the “small clouds” may not seem impressive at first, but there is always bigger clouds coming behind the smaller ones. We can’t give up praying and believing.

Lastly, the Lord spoke to us about keeping the fire. It’s our responsibility to not let the fire die down and turn to smoke. As we keep faithfully adding the wood (our loving obedience), the Holy Spirit increases the fire. This passion for our Lord keeps us close to Jesus while simultaneously freeing us from the sins which so easily entangle. May we listen closely and be doers of the Word…not hearers only!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hi Family and Friends,

This week I am speaking from James Chapter One (from the series: “Growing Your Faith”). The title of the message is “Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall.” Did you know that James compares the Word of God to a mirror? Why does he do this, and what is he saying to us about this? Please pray (you can also come before service and pray with us at 9am) for the service and come expecting to meet with the Lord Jesus. He is alive and loves to bless those who invite Him to take control.

On another note, please pray for Sister Florence Bogdan (former pastor’s wife) as she continues to recover. She is expected to go home in early October and welcomes any calls while she is in rehab (215-830-8510). God bless!

Pastor Mark

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I’ve had this conversation too often. A parent is lamenting to me about the troubles and problems of their son (or daughter) and says, “they won’t listen to anyone.” Years ago, before the nation of Israel went into captivity, the Lord sent a prophet, Jeremiah, to warn the people of coming judgment. After 23 years of preaching, here is what Jeremiah said, “For 23 years…the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened. And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention” (Jeremiah 25:3-4). Instead of paying attention to God and being willing to repent and change, the people replied, “It’s no use. We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart” (Jere. 18:12). As I read Jeremiah, I see there are two choices for God’s people: listen to God or stubbornly follow your own ways. It’s easy to look back and say, “what were they thinking! If only they heeded God’s Word, and turned from evil, they would have avoided destruction and received the blessing of God.” We must remember, the warnings in God’s Word were recorded for our benefit. Will we listen to what God says? Are we turning from the stubbornness of our own heart and seeking the Lord and His Spirit? It does no good to know what God says and ignore Him. My heart aches for the people of America, and the city of Philadelphia. So many are lost, simply “doing their own thing” and rarely consider the Lord or what He says. As believers in Jesus, let’s lead by example as those who love to listen to our Lord; and with tender hearts say, “here I am Lord, ready and willing to love and obey you.” You can make a difference and bless others…not by being caught up in the godlessness, but by showing what it really means to follow Jesus and love others. God bless!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I believe this Sunday will be an important day in the life of our churches. Guest speaker, Jason Jablonski, is coming with a specific word for us. He told me that God has impressed him to preach a message about God’s provision for His people while in the desert…and that the rain is coming! Jason came last year and God used him and his wife Laura to really stir our hearts. I especially remember the Sunday night prayer time after the message. Many were crying out to God as His Spirit moved upon us.

Desperate times call for desperate people. Will we accept “status quo” or stir ourselves to seek the Lord with all our heart? While reading Jeremiah this week, the Lord stopped me at this challenging verse (Jere. 30:21), “for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?” I want to stand up and be counted as one of the devoted who commits my whole life to live close to God. Will you join me?

Please make a specific commitment to pray and ask Jesus to meet us in a strong way this Sunday. We meet at 10am and 6pm at Highway Tabernacle and 12 noon at Resurrection Life.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

God, in his awesome wisdom, divided our lives up into small units. We call them “days”. Each morning we wake up and have the gift and opportunity of another round of life. By the grace of God, we’re not stuck in the past. Writing to the   Philippians, Paul spoke about his quest for knowing Jesus in the present. He wrote, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made  perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…” Phil. 3:12-13. I feel most effective and alive when I adopt the biblical attitude of pressing to take hold of Christ today. This posture of heart reminds of an interview I saw with a professional baseball player. He was asked about his mindset when he stepped up to the plate for a new at bat. He explained it something like this, “I try to forget about what I did in my last at-bat. You see, if I got a good hit previously, I might become proud and think it’s ok if I strike out this time. Or, if I struck out last time, I may be intimidated and feel like I can’t hit this guy. So, the best thing I can do is focus on the moment and concentrate everything on getting a hit now.” I like that attitude. If I had a bad day yesterday, I can go to Jesus, repent, and focus on today. If I had an awesome day yesterday, I don’t want to just coast along on those accomplishments, but do all I can to advance God’s kingdom now. May the Lord help us as we seek to live full of his Holy Spirit right now! Yesterday doesn’t matter so much…it’s where we are headed today.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I am sure you can relate to Isaiah. He was living in a time of spiritual distress, when so many people (even God’s people) were following their own stubborn hearts instead of yielding to God. Isaiah knew the dire need of God’s power and yet he saw people destroying their lives by ignoring him. In a desperate prayer, Isaiah cried, “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!” (Isa. 64:1). Isaiah wanted God to “show up” in power…to demonstrate to the people his glory and reality. There are   periods of time when God seems to leave people alone to their own devises and there are times when God acts for all to see. I ask myself, “how can I be in the place with God, so I can rightly perceive him and receive his answers to prayer”? The secret to receiving from God is found a little further in Isa. Chapter 64, “Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.” Millions of people have lived and died since time began on this planet. Few have really heard or perceive who God is or what he has done. And yet, God holds out the keys to us…to wait for him. If we learn how to pray, how to trust, how to humbly wait on God for the meaning of everyday life, he will gladly show himself to us as a God of action his action. He promises not to be a distant or silent God. The question is, “are we willing to discipline our heart to learn to wait and to trust in him as the source of life itself?” We wait and God acts. This doesn’t mean we do nothing but sit and wait in a corner somewhere. We wait by learning how to pray as we live and acting in the faith that he invests in our   spirit. So, never get tired of waiting. God has a breakthrough coming for you because he, “acts on behalf of those who wait for him” v4.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Dear Friends,

I feel the Lord has impressed on my heart to bring you a series of messages on Sunday mornings called, “Growing Your Faith”. In our relationship with God, nothing is more important than faith which is motivated by love! The Book of James (our series focus) pours out insights and wisdom about faith, and how to tell if ours is genuine or not. These messages are important for us at Highway in order to move us to a “higher place” of growth and maturity as individuals and together as His church. This Sunday’s sermon will challenge us to consider “How Faith Grows” and is connected with the necessity of tests and difficulties. Let’s face it, we live in a world which largely ignores God in its’ pursuit of materialism and momentary pleasures. Unless we learn to grow strong faith in Jesus, we will miss out on God’s best and end up living for passing, superficial desires. God has great plans for us…let’s go after Him! Come hear his Word this Sunday at 10:00am.
