“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Valentine’s may be a man-made tradition, but the truth of love uncovers precious jewels of spiritual truth. After all, the Bible tells us that “God is love.” True love, in all its forms, originates in him and through him. As much as I seek to live by faith and believe what the Word teaches about the love of God, there are times in my life when I just need to sense his love deep in my heart. I remember one particular day several years ago…it was a Wednesday when I was fasting and praying.  A great spiritual battle was raging in my heart.  Thoughts were attacking me like, “You’re not making a difference…you may as well give up” and “Nobody really cares, not even God.” As I was driving along, my heart was crying out to God for grace and mercy. Right there on the highway it was as if heaven opened! His Word from Jeremiah 31:3-4 poured into my spirit. God said, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt…” In the past I have known what it is to rejoice in the Lord, but at that moment I felt as if the Lord was saying, “I am rejoicing over you.” It was hard to keep driving as I felt God had pulled back the curtain a little to show me how intensely he loves me and his people. In our country, I know that most people celebrate Valentine’s Day immersed in thoughts of love between individuals. Of course God created love between one another as well, and this is good. However, human love only goes so far. If we try to build our life on expectations of how others should love us, we will always be victims of disappointment. However, God’s love never fails. He knows us and knows just what we need. His love is not up and down or based on our moods or achievements. He continues to love us…no matter what. The best I can do is live by faith in the One who loves me and commit myself to loving him back. This reciprocal love is demonstrated in our lives by our willingness to obey him, knowing that he is all-wise and knows the best path for us. On this Valentine’s Day, you may look back on your life and consider many times you were let down by others. But, don’t lose your focus! Keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to thank God for his everlasting love. From the strength of God’s love, determine to look for opportunities to love others. I believe this is the secret of experiencing a full and happy life.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

“And they lived happily ever after” sounds wonderful in fairy tales but doesn’t work in real life. I am grateful that true love and joy is available to us in the Lord, and I believe he wants us to be happy. However, too many people adopt a concept of “happiness” which is far removed from the truth. As I grow in the Lord, I realize how self-centered I am at the core, and how God, my Father, takes time and care in rooting this out. As my Father disciplines, corrects, and trains me, the process is not “easy” or “happy.” Hebrews 12:10 says, “God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” So, I see here, the outcome is more important than our feelings. God will sacrifice our comfort for the greater results. This truth is seen clearly in the life of Abraham. God blessed Abraham and Sarah with a child in their old age. He was their answer to prayer! Their son Isaac (which means laughter) represented the future…and yet God commanded Abraham to sacrifice him on an altar. Thankfully, God intervened to stop the final act. But the point is that Abraham had to be willing to release everything and everyone from first place in his heart. God knows how easily we slip into idolatry, and he has every right to test our love. Only when our love is firmly established in our Heavenly Father can we rightly relate to the people and the things God allows us to have. So, “happily ever after” will come for the believer in heaven where God is all in all. However, while we are “in the body” we must expect tests, trials and feelings of discomfort. In the end, it is all good because God is a good Father and is for us, not against us.

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I just finished reading the end of the Book…and we win! God concluded the Bible with the Book of Revelation to show us that no matter what happens in this world, he is sovereign and his plan will prevail. As I was reading these last chapters today, I was moved by two insights. First, God loves his people. He has great things planned for us, no matter what present difficulties we face. Although most people in the world fall for the deception of the enemy by rejecting the grace of God, the Lord always has a remnant of those who love and serve him. Chapters 19 through 22 of Revelation gives us glorious details of the eternal future for his people! Especially during times of severe persecution, Christians throughout the centuries have found great comfort and persevering power in these chapters of God’s Word. The second thought which challenged me from Revelation is found in 18:4, which says, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues…” This challenge to “come out” is a common prophetic warning (Isa. 52:11; Jer. 51:45; 2 Cor. 6:17) and refers to the need for God’s people to separate themselves from the wickedness and evil in the world. The warning against “worldliness” was emphasized in early Pentecostal preaching and writing. Although some extreme measures were promoted (some said watching a movie or engaging in sports was sin), the Lord expects us to make daily decisions of separation from sinful practices. In my lifetime, I have seen the pendulum swing from separation to indulgence. Many Christians today see no problem with sex outside of marriage, watching dirty movies, cursing, lying when it’s convenient, and many other practices against the Spirit of Jesus. Just as surely as God will bless his own, so he will judge evil. The Word tells us that repentance starts with God’s people (Rev. 3:19). May we be found as a bride keeping herself pure for her husband.
