HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Vision renews and changes life. To live without vision is to live in the dark, just passing time until the body falls over. In the Bible, we see vision connected to an “open revelation of God’s Word.” He reveals and we receive. A Pharisee named Saul thought he could see clearly until he had a vision from the Lord. In Acts 26 we read of Paul (formally Saul) sharing his testimony about God’s vision with King Agrippa. I notice two special insights from Paul’s account. First, true vision originates from above. Paul said, “I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven” V. 19. James also speaks of the wisdom that comes down from above. Furthermore, we are instructed by Jesus to pray to our Father, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Life changing vision begins in the heart of God before being seen by us. And we see, through eyes of faith, not just what is happening, but God’s vision of change and growth that can happen. Heaven is not meant to be some far off “dreamy” place, only to be experienced in eternity. Through God’s vision we can experience in the present a taste of heaven touching earth. The kingdom of God exists to permeate and influence the kingdom of this world. We recognize that evil is strong and will increase before the coming of Jesus, but through God’s vision, we learn the secret of overcoming sin and evil. The second insight I see from Paul’s testimony is that vision from God   results in action. Faith without works is dead. In the vision to Paul, Jesus said, “I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God”…v.17-18.

God has a vision for us individually and for us together as his church. His vision will require our careful attention and sustained obedience because the vision does not simply come one day and is fulfilled the next. We need strength and  perseverance to continually live out the vision. Our acts of faith and  obedience are used by God to bring hope and deliverance to those enslaved by the power of evil. Heaven is waiting to touch earth. Others are counting on us…will we be obedient to His vision from above?

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hello Everyone,

TGIF =) We just wanted to say thank you to those who came out this past Monday to minister to the homeless! We're thankful we were able to go out before this snow storm came through. We had several come; we had a number of children help stuff supply bags and even help with passing them out to the homeless. It was great! Thank you also to everyone who came to help make the food, and also those who braved the cold to distribute it =)

Here are some awesome testimonies from our time out on Monday of lives being touched that we thought to share.

Volunteers got to pray with many individuals as food and supplies were distributed. The following are 3 encounters among many that occurred:

1/ One guy called Tim had pain in both knees and 50% of the pain left after we prayed (one knee) then almost all of it the second time then the pain left completely after we prayed the third time! Yay! Jesus!!!

2/ Another homeless gentleman, Al, was walking by with a cane and I offered him a bag and asked him about the cane and what happened. He explained he had an accident with a toolbox and i prayed with him - he was healed instantly and could not believe what had just happened - to the glory of God. he kept saying "I don't understand this" and he was carrying his cane in his hand ~ I watched walk away, not limping anymore and going down the steps into the subway. Praise God!

3/ Another lady who was walking by when I was praying with these two guys asked for prayer to heal her broken heart - I prayed with her and shared the love of God and she was sobbing - I blessed her and gave her a hug and told her I felt like the Lord would deliver her and use her testimony to heal many and bring others into the kingdom.

It is exciting to see God at work in peoples lives and it is well worth going out in the cold for =)

More news and dates on future outreaches will follow soon.

Blessings to you all and many thanks.

Roland & Thecla

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Hi everyone,

This past week I have spent a lot of time praying and thinking about the vision and direction for our church (I include Resurrection Life). As you may know, this Sunday is our “Vision casting and business meeting.” I sometimes think of God’s vision for ministry like walking in the fog toward a building in the distance. From far away, you know the building is there, but can only make out the general details. As you continue walking, you start to see the windows and more specific details take shape.  After being pastor here at Highway, I feel like I see less fog and more specific details of God’s vision!

I often begin my sermons with a comment like, “this is the most important sermon I have ever spoken here.” Well, I must say with all sincerity, that this Sunday I will definitely preach the most important sermon I have ever spoken here! In fact, I had another message in mind at the beginning of the week, but today God has poured some amazing thoughts into my heart to bring to you. I can’t wait to share these with you.

Just a reminder…we will begin pre-service worship this Sunday at 10:00am and the “official” service will begin at 10:30. After the service we will enjoy a lunch together followed by a brief business session.

One more thing…tonight at 7:30 we are hosting the “Conquer the Night” event. Our gathering will focus on Jesus Himself. Come with a desire to draw close to the Lord. You will not be disappointed!

See you later…Pastor Mark

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

“You want me to do what?” The assignment for Moses seemed so extreme that God sent an angel in a burning bush to deliver the message. After forty years as an “anonymous” shepherd, Moses was called to go back to Egypt and free the Israelites. As I read this story, I realized the biggest hurdle for Moses was not physical, but spiritual. Moses was filled with doubt and fear because his eyes were on Moses. After God challenged him with the task, Moses answered, “who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:11). Moses was both right and wrong. For sure, he could not accomplish this on his own. However, he underestimated God. The Lord answered Moses, not by disclaiming Moses’ inability, but by refocusing Moses on His presence and power. “And God said, ‘I will be with you’” (v. 12).

This exchange between God and Moses reveals something important for you. God has a task for you in life and you can’t do this in your own strength. As long as your eyes are just on you, you will feel helpless and anxious. However, if you are willing to do God’s will, He will help you accomplish your life mission. He doesn’t call you to failure or to do something which could never happen. The only appropriate response to the call of God is faith and obedience. Even as we realize our own limitations, we can look past them to the Lord’s power and grace. With him, we can do what he calls us to do. It will take time and there will be some scary moments, but doing the will of God is all that really matters. This is the “great adventure”. Moses faced his fears, refused to stay in the “comfort” of the desert, and stepped out with God. “The One who calls you is faithful and he will do it” (1 Thess. 5:24). What about you?

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

It was a rough time for Isaac and his family. Because they were the “new people” they felt the pressure of racism and rejection. The Philistines did all they could to pressure them out of the neighborhood. After moving a short distance away from the Philistines (to the Valley of Gerar) Isaac’s group needed water so they did the hard work of digging two wells. When the herdsmen of that area heard that Isaac found water, they quarreled with Isaac’s family and forced them away from the wells. Finally, Isaac was able to dig a well which no one quarreled over. He named the well Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land” (Gen. 26:22).

Isaac never gave up in spite of how he and his family were treated. They responded graciously, and kept trusting and seeking until something worked out. Right after this event, the Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham” (Gen. 26:24). By connecting these two events (Isaac’s test with the wells and God’s encouragement), here is what helps me. First, life is challenging and we cannot expect an easy path. However, God is always aware of the difficulties we face and gives us the strength to go on with a good attitude. And, on top of it all, the Lord reminds us not to be afraid of anything because he is with us and will bless us in ways we can’t imagine!

God does not forget you. He not only knows the road you take, but he empowers you to have victory. His ultimate purpose is to make you a blessing to others through it all!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Growing up I remember times with my Dad in a boat. Sometimes we would go to the middle of lake to fish or just ride around. When he let me drive the boat, I remember how important it was to fix my eyes on the destination…the place on the shore where we wanted to land. Without fixing the destination, it was easy to drift off course, and even get lost.

For me today, the Word of God reveals my destination, that which I am to fix my attention and energies. While reading this past week, I felt the Lord gave me a few verses for my 2014 focus. By keeping these verses in mind, I will not drift off course and find myself lost in the world. Psalm 32:8-9 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.”

The Lord himself is my destination. My main responsibility each day is to look to him, listening to his word for direction, and maintaining a teachable spirit. He promised to be my counselor. I must desire his counsel and listen closely to what he says. The Christian life is not “hard” in the sense of unattainable or complicated. As we rely on the grace of God and exercise simple trust and faith, we will stay on course, one day landing on the shore to be ever with him. Keep your destination in mind!

 -Pastor Mark
