“Following Jesus and Loving People”

As we enter 2016, God gives us the privilege of deciding our priorities and pursuits. We emphasize a January week of prayer because prayer glorifies God and sets your life on a good and fruitful pathway. The theme for this week of prayer (Jan. 3^rd to 8^th) is “Greater Things” from the words of Jesus in John 14:12, “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” Jesus (in John 14) is preparing the disciples for his death, and for what they would do after his Resurrection and infilling of the Holy Spirit. Even though they would experience temporary sorrow, they would accomplish “greater things” in the days ahead. What are the greater things Jesus challenges us, his present-day disciples, to go after? He wants us to grow in greater faith. Notice how Jesus elevates the importance of faith by repeating statements as, “believe in me” (v11), and “anyone who has faith in me” (v12a). Faith is not as complicated as we sometimes imagine. The first step of faith is “showing up”. A step of greater faith for you this year may be to “show up” for the prayer meetings, even when your flesh pulls you back to your chair in front of the TV. When we choose faith over indifference, we find ourselves desiring greater obedience and greater works. From the place of greater faith comes greater works. Jesus said that true believers “will do what I have been doing” (v12). Growth in the “greater things” of faith in Jesus translates into the “greater things” of the actions of Jesus. By praying we not only discover what Jesus wants us to do, but we also receive the desire and power to do these greater things. “For it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Phil. 2:13). My prayer and desire for our churches is that 2016 be a year of growth of faith and action, of inward and outward advancement.

The step is ours; the power is God’s!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

When I think of a new year, I think of “renewal”. In my life with God, I discover that my need is not so much the renewal of “new information”, but the renewal of strength and perseverance in that which God has already revealed. For example, Jesus (in Matthew 22:37) declared, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and love your neighbor as yourself.” For the year 2016 to be a success, in the highest sense of the word, we must embrace the renewal of our purpose to be instruments of the love of Jesus to this world. This is our number one need of renewal. If we advance in everything else but miss love, we fail miserably. Paul wrote eloquently about the grand themes of faith and hope, but said, “The greatest of these is love” (1 Cor. 13:13). The Apostle John also emphasized this renewal of love in his letters. He said, “I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another” (2 John v5). Loving people with the sacrificial love of Jesus trumps the best strategies, structures, and programs. This may sound extravagant, but I believe that if we pray each morning for God to use us to love and serve others, we need not ever have a “bad” day. The love of Jesus is powerful and real! It is the greatest source of strength in the universe, enabling us to finish the race we started. Paul once declared this about love: “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (I Cor. 13:7).

Remember, the strength of perseverance is in new beginnings. May we begin this new year resolving to keep on loving God and others. You will have an awesome year!

I often wonder why so many people don’t surrender to the Lordship of Jesus. I also wonder, “What is it that will keep more people out of heaven more than anything else?” The answer to this can be discovered from the words of Mary, mother of Jesus. Right after she received a Word from God through her relative Elizabeth, Mary exclaimed, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant…he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble” (Luke 1:46-48, 51-52). Notice here the great gulf between those who are proud and those who are humble. Mary describes herself as a servant who dwells in a humble place. From this heart attitude of humility, the Lord lifted her up. When Jesus came to earth, those who noticed and received their Messiah did so because their hearts were soft and receptive to the promptings of God. Herod, Caiaphas, Pilate and those like them missed out entirely because they were too full of themselves. Their eyes were on themselves and did not notice what was right in front of them! From reading and studying the Bible over 40 years, I repeatedly discover how God loves to share his grace with the humble and withholds his grace from those who think they have it all together. Please remember this one great truth about Christmas: in the end, humility always overcomes the pride of man. Every person walking on this planet has the awesome responsibility to determine the “state” of his heart. Can God say of you, “I am mindful of the humble state of my servant”? The Lord will not forget his devoted followers. He has goodness and mercy in mind for you!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

God keeps his promises! The pages of Genesis through Malachi (Old Testament) contain many specific prophesies predicting the coming of the Messiah. When the fullness of time came, Jesus Christ burst on the scene as a light shining in the darkness. As shepherds and wise men looked into the face of baby Jesus, they saw hope for the world being born again. I enjoy celebrating Christmas, not just because of sentimental memories surrounding family and friends. Christmas does more than flood my memories, it fills me with hope for the future. We are promised of another appearance of Jesus, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way…” (Acts 1:11). Before Jesus came the first time, John the Baptist preceded him as the “forerunner”, proclaiming to the world, “Get ready, the King is coming!” In a real sense, believers in Jesus today carry the same message of John the Baptist. Our proclamation does not end with, “Jesus came”, but that “he will come again…and soon”! Anyone with a knowledge of the Bible and current events can see the amazing alignment of the prophesies. God kept his promise before. Jesus came. God will keep his promise again. Jesus will return. Our daily responsibility is similar to that of John. Jesus said of him, “John was a lamp that burned and gave light” (John 5:35). We simply love and follow Jesus as lights. While the world burns for various causes and passions, may we be counted among the unashamed who “burn” for the Gospel of Jesus. So, the story of Jesus is not merely a past chapter of history. The Lord Jesus is alive right now, and is about to write the last chapter.
