“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I just finished reading the end of the Book…and we win! God concluded the Bible with the Book of Revelation to show us that no matter what happens in this world, he is sovereign and his plan will prevail. As I was reading these last chapters today, I was moved by two insights. First, God loves his people. He has great things planned for us, no matter what present difficulties we face. Although most people in the world fall for the deception of the enemy by rejecting the grace of God, the Lord always has a remnant of those who love and serve him. Chapters 19 through 22 of Revelation gives us glorious details of the eternal future for his people! Especially during times of severe persecution, Christians throughout the centuries have found great comfort and persevering power in these chapters of God’s Word. The second thought which challenged me from Revelation is found in 18:4, which says, “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues…” This challenge to “come out” is a common prophetic warning (Isa. 52:11; Jer. 51:45; 2 Cor. 6:17) and refers to the need for God’s people to separate themselves from the wickedness and evil in the world. The warning against “worldliness” was emphasized in early Pentecostal preaching and writing. Although some extreme measures were promoted (some said watching a movie or engaging in sports was sin), the Lord expects us to make daily decisions of separation from sinful practices. In my lifetime, I have seen the pendulum swing from separation to indulgence. Many Christians today see no problem with sex outside of marriage, watching dirty movies, cursing, lying when it’s convenient, and many other practices against the Spirit of Jesus. Just as surely as God will bless his own, so he will judge evil. The Word tells us that repentance starts with God’s people (Rev. 3:19). May we be found as a bride keeping herself pure for her husband.
