“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The other night I watched a documentary on the Hubble telescope and was amazed by the pictures of far-reaching stars, planets, and galaxies. I am humbled as I consider the power of God and how he maintains and orders the galaxies. As we consider God’s work, a strong case can be made from both creation and the Bible concerning the “order” and “organization” of God. We live with the consistency of day and night and the cycles of the seasons. From the beginning of Genesis 1:1, God takes the chaos of darkness and brings order through light and life. How does this relate to you? As a follower of Jesus, we invite the order and discipline of God to replace our chaos. His power of “let there be light” floods our inner darkness with his light of salvation. Now, instead of growing wild weeds, we cooperate with Jesus in growing the precious fruit of the Spirit. This requires attention and diligence on our part, as we yield our thoughts and actions to the Lord. Order is needed both personally and corporately. In the Book of Titus, the Apostle Paul wrote to Titus, expressing the need for Titus to help organize the churches on the island of Crete. He said, “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking…” (Titus 1:5a, NKJV). So, we see here that “order” is not contrary to Spirit life, but helps us to experience the life of God. Organization and structure are needed for healthy churches, and for healthy believers. Show me a follower of Jesus who develops prayer and Bible reading each day, and you will almost always discover someone who is growing good fruit in their life with God. Group Bible studies, church services, and involvement in ministry are not “merits” which impress God, but are rather our ordered response to the Bible’s teaching. We order our lives, not as an attempt to become a child of God, but because we are his children!  Self-discipline and order in our daily routines demonstrate our love for God and his people. As “president” of your own life, may you govern yourself wisely!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The Lord Jesus is the head of his church! Sometimes things happen in the life of a local church body that seems to shake it up. During the past month, Highway has experienced the sudden departure of some key people. Roland and Thecla (and family) are now living in Harrisburg, PA, as they follow the will of God in preparing for ministry. And just last week, Pieter Ginting returned home to Indonesia after hearing the news of his father’s death. These precious people will be sorely missed! It’s easy to ask, “God what are you doing?” As I have prayed and thought about these situations, I must first say that events like this happen in every church. People feel called away, and people move back home. There’s no fault anywhere here. As a church, we are called to love, invest, and send out whoever God sends to us for however long. Another truth we must consider is the timing of God. He provides what we need at just the right time. In the absence of these wonderful people, God is raising up others to “fill the gap”. Our own Edwin Diaz has stepped forward and is willing to serve the Lord and Highway as the head usher (Roland’s former position). And this past Sunday a Temple student, DJ, stepped forward to play the bass guitar (Pieter’s spot). DJ also came to Highway on Labor Day for several hours (along with Elijah Afrifa) to familiarize himself with the sound system. A good friend of DJ, whose name is Eddie, will also be coming to Highway and helping as the Lord directs. The right people at the right time…God shows his provision and blessings, just when we need them most! More than at any time, Highway Tabernacle and Resurrection Life needs you. Would you ask God how and where he would have you invest yourself in his work? Your family and work places are the primary places of your investments, but God also calls each of us, as family members, to serve and build up one another. 1 Corinthians 12:27 says, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” Our vision remains…to build a family in order to transform a community. God is helping us and you are a part of it!

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

A Muslim man grew up around Christians, but no one shared the Gospel of Jesus with him for many years. He gave his life to Christ when he was older and made this observation: either Christians don’t care that much about others, or they don’t really believe what Jesus and the Bible says about heaven and hell. Ouch! I had to examine my own heart and ask, “Do I truly believe in Jesus and actively share my faith”? Too many Christians look at “witnessing” as a duty to be done only when absolutely necessary. In our cultural climate, we are afraid that sharing our faith in Jesus will get us in trouble or cause others to reject us. The Apostle Paul, when writing a short letter to his friend Philemon, said, “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ” (Philemon v6). There are many ways to be active in sharing our faith. Usually, I don’t share my faith with someone the first time I meet them, especially if I know I will see them again. I want others to get to know me a little, so that when they discover I follow Jesus, there will be greater credibility. The best witness we can be for Jesus is by first living a godly, consistent life. This doesn’t mean we keep silent, but that we recognize the power of “showing” Christ before speaking for him. Sometimes in sharing Jesus, God will lead us to others, and sometimes he will lead others to us. Either way, we need to be prepared. Have a Bible nearby. Practice telling your story (or testimony) to others. Learn where the verses are which clearly show the way of salvation. The more we share our faith, the more our life takes on the sense of “mission”. In fact, to follow Jesus means we also embrace his mission. Furthermore, Paul (in Philemon) connects our sharing the faith with growing in our understanding of “every good thing we have in Christ”. Instead of diminishing us, sharing Jesus with others increases our understanding and gives us greater insight into the good things of God! Most of all, sharing Jesus with another may result in their salvation and eternity with Christ! Would you pray right now for Jesus to lead you to share him with someone?

HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

There are few thoughts that comfort me more than this: the Creator of the universe is my Father! Sometimes life spins out of control with its multitude of tasks and demands. What brings me back to peace (and sanity!) is knowing that my Father is the greatest, and knows how to make all things work together for my good. Truly, he is a good Father! The Bible mentions  “father” over 1000 times, and in the New Testament, John’s Gospel mentions father more than any other NT book (109 times, in the NIV). Let’s see what John says about the Father.

* The Father is seeking us.

“A time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23

* The Father is never asleep or away.

Jesus said, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” John 5:17

* The Father sustains us daily with his presence and provision.

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.” John 6:32

* The Father honors those who honor Jesus.

“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” John 12:26

* The Father loves us.

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” John 14:21

As brothers and sisters in Jesus we are never alone! We can talk to our Father any time and any place. We can enjoy his constant, faithful presence knowing that he loves us and will take care of us, no matter what we go through. I pray these thoughts of your Father bring joy to your heart and encouragement in your daily challenges.
