“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The other night I watched a documentary on the Hubble telescope and was amazed by the pictures of far-reaching stars, planets, and galaxies. I am humbled as I consider the power of God and how he maintains and orders the galaxies. As we consider God’s work, a strong case can be made from both creation and the Bible concerning the “order” and “organization” of God. We live with the consistency of day and night and the cycles of the seasons. From the beginning of Genesis 1:1, God takes the chaos of darkness and brings order through light and life. How does this relate to you? As a follower of Jesus, we invite the order and discipline of God to replace our chaos. His power of “let there be light” floods our inner darkness with his light of salvation. Now, instead of growing wild weeds, we cooperate with Jesus in growing the precious fruit of the Spirit. This requires attention and diligence on our part, as we yield our thoughts and actions to the Lord. Order is needed both personally and corporately. In the Book of Titus, the Apostle Paul wrote to Titus, expressing the need for Titus to help organize the churches on the island of Crete. He said, “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking…” (Titus 1:5a, NKJV). So, we see here that “order” is not contrary to Spirit life, but helps us to experience the life of God. Organization and structure are needed for healthy churches, and for healthy believers. Show me a follower of Jesus who develops prayer and Bible reading each day, and you will almost always discover someone who is growing good fruit in their life with God. Group Bible studies, church services, and involvement in ministry are not “merits” which impress God, but are rather our ordered response to the Bible’s teaching. We order our lives, not as an attempt to become a child of God, but because we are his children!  Self-discipline and order in our daily routines demonstrate our love for God and his people. As “president” of your own life, may you govern yourself wisely!
