“Following Jesus and Loving People”

This past weekend, we had special services and a partnership weekend that highlighted “Next Generation Ministries”! Jesus, in what we call the Great Commission, commanded us to disciple and teach others to “obey everything I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:20). I believe obeying Jesus means we start where we are, with our own “Jerusalem”…the children and youth all around us. To love, pray, and invest in young people assures the growth of God’s kingdom for the years ahead. In a very real sense, the transfer of our Christian values and relationship with Jesus is the best inheritance gift we can ever give. Most people in America want the youth of our nation to succeed, but don’t offer a clear path. Telling them to “just be happy” offers no real wisdom. The “mist” of moral advice coming from today’s leaders creates a “fog” in the hearts of youth. My heart breaks for so many young people I meet who are reaping the results from the lostness of the previous generation. There is HOPE! The Good News of Jesus explodes with truth and power, enabling change that really works. The answers to the great questions of life are found in God’s Word. The writer of Ecclesiastes condensed his advice to the young in one simple statement…“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecc. 12:1). Next Generation Ministries is about training and challenging young people to “remember” God in every area of life. The leaders of NGM are followers of Jesus who have discovered that God is faithful and that true life begins with a relationship with God through Jesus. Our desire is for every child and young person to “remember their creator” by loving him each day and living according to his Word. The task is great and sometimes feels overwhelming, but together we can make a difference for eternity. Would you dedicate yourself to “building a family that serves our community”? Let’s start by investing in our greatest resource…the youth!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Just as water needs heat to boil, relationships need love to grow. Without love, friendships and special relationships slip into a lukewarm state, and eventually cool off. It’s no different with our relationship with God. Yesterday, I finished reading the “Song of Songs” (or, Song of Solomon) which eloquently describes the love of a husband and his bride. It is no stretch to apply what is written in these eight chapters to the relationship between our heavenly groom, the Lord Jesus, and his bride, the church. I notice as I read, a progression of the part of the bride, which seems to parallel the Christian’s love toward God. So many new converts are excited about their new-found love with the Lord, and express it somewhat like the bride does in the Song of Songs 2:16, “My lover is mine and I am his…” Many prayers of new converts start with themselves and are focused on what the Lord can do for them (“my lover is mine”). Although this is natural and not a bad thing, our love needs to grow deeper and more mature. Later in 6:3 we see this progression in the bride’s statement, “I am my lover’s and my lover is mine.” Notice the switch (comparing 2:16 with 6:3) in the opening statements of “ownership” from “my lover is mine” to “I am my lover’s”. The wording here is not an accident, but demonstrates the pathway of growth from self-centeredness to Christ-centeredness. Finally, in 7:10 we read, “I belong to my lover, and his desire is for me.” We can feel the fire here! The bride has progressed to the place where she has no fear in giving herself to her heavenly groom, knowing that he is good and desires what is best for her.

As we grow in the Lord, may we rejoice in being able to think less about ourselves and more about Jesus. The discovery that life is not “all about me” frees us to enjoy the greatest relationship with the One who is our destiny. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!

“Following Jesus and Loving People”

The Book of Revelation is an amazing book…in a class all by itself! A lady once told me, “I don’t read Revelation because it’s too scary.” For me, it’s just the opposite. I am encouraged and comforted when I read Revelation and here are some reasons why. First, the Revelation reveals the love and concern Jesus has for his church. The first three chapters reveal messages of Jesus to seven different first century churches (when Rev. was written down). We are clearly shown that Jesus not only knows what is going on, but is intimately involved in the churches. Jesus doesn’t forget about us! He’s not too busy.

Second, the Book of Revelation assures me that God not only created a plan, but that he will carry it out. No matter how rebellious and evil the world becomes, in the end Jesus and his people are winners forever!  My favorite verse in Revelation is 11:15 which says, “The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.’” Wow! No matter what horrible story comes out next on the news, Jesus will set all things right. An older Pastor friend of mine used to often say, “Jesus will sort it all out.” What now seems chaotic and confusing will give way to true justice and lasting righteousness.

Third, the Revelation challenges me to overcome sin and live a holy life. As you read Revelation, you notice that it’s the minority that overcomes. The vast majority of people don’t get it, and don’t even want to follow the ways of the Lamb of God. Only those who place their faith in Jesus and demonstrate this by a life of holiness to the Lord, will escape the coming wrath. Even the idea of God judging sin causes a mere shrug among the masses…but God is still God. He loves people, but vows to judge sin. I want to be found in Christ, with my sins nailed to the cross. Revelation 12:11 tells us how to defeat evil and the evil one. “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”

So, take the time to mine the wonderful treasures awaiting you in this last book of the Bible! We are told, “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near” (Rev. 1:3).
