“Following Jesus and Loving People”

God always provides rays of sunshine when the days are dark. I just finished the book of Jeremiah. This prophet received the “unenviable” calling to stand alone in warning his fellow citizens of Judah of the impending judgment of God on their wicked ways. Chapters 39 and 52 (the last chapter) both depict the stark details of how King Zedekiah and Judah met their end. What makes this so sad is that it did not have to happen. In chapter after chapter, Jeremiah is God’s instrument to call the people to repentance. But, they refuse to listen and choose to harden their hearts. God was patient and warned them for years. No one could say, “God didn’t let them know about the consequences.” Also, many of the last chapters of Jeremiah speak of the judgment to come on the surrounding nations which treated Israel with contempt and heartless oppression. Although Judah fell hard, God would also see that other nations would get what they deserved!

Some people may read these last chapters of Jeremiah and ask, “Is this what the Bible is all about…judgment and destruction?” Absolutely not! The Bible describes God’s wrath on sin as his “strange work”, something he never wants to do. God loves people, but because he is holy and just, he must deal with evil…wherever it is found.

After many chapters revealing the bleak future for nations and people who reject the Lord, a ray of sunshine bursts forth in the very last chapter. A previous king of Judah, Jehoiachin, had been taken captive years before and was kept in a prison in Babylon. The Bible tells us of a new day which dawned when a new ruler of Babylon, “released Jehoiachin king of Judah and freed him from prison…he spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings…so Jehoiachin put aside his prison clothes and for the rest of his life ate regularly at the king’s table” (Jeremiah 52:31-33).  This encouraging ending reminds me of how God loves his people and delights in setting the prisoners free!
