“Following Jesus and Loving People”

As a Christian, there are basic moral issues with which I can stand in agreement with others of different religions or no religion at all. For example, we can work together as a group of concerned citizens in helping feed the poor, or providing for children at risk. However, there are issues at the heart of Christian faith for which I must be willing to stand alone, if necessary. One such issue is the identity of Jesus Christ. Many would try to get us to compromise for the sake of agreement to say, “Jesus was a good man, but not God”. Others would try to say that Jesus made statements about his being “inferior” to the Father. We must remember, however, that when Jesus became a man, he willingly submitted his human knowledge and actions under the Father’s sovereignty. He was fully human and fully deity. As God the Son, he clothed himself with a human body and dwelt among us. In Romans 9:5 Paul speaks of Jesus as, “Christ, who is God over all, forever praised!” What are some other reasons we believe Jesus is God?

By his virgin birth (Matthew 1:23, Luke 1:31,35)

By the many great miracles he did (John 10:38)

By his sinless life (1 Peter 1:18-19)

By his substitutionary work on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:3)

By his resurrection from the dead (Matt. 28, Romans 1:4)

By his receiving worship from people (Matt. 14:33)

By his own admission of Oneness with God, for which he received the death penalty of blasphemy (Luke 22:66-71)

By his exaltation to the right hand of God (Acts 1:9,11; 2:33)

By the worship and praise of all creation in heaven (Revelation 5:11-14)

In the tract, “The Incomparable Christ” (author unknown), we read,

“He stands forth upon the highest pinnacle of heavenly glory, proclaimed of God, acknowledged by angels, adored by saints, and feared by devils, as the living, personal Christ, our Lord and Savior. We are either going to be forever with Him or forever without Him. It was the incomparable Christ who said: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me’ (John 14:6).”

I am a follower of Jesus is because “He is Lord”!
