“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I have been praying for a friend who is going through a particularly difficult trial. His faith in the Lord is strong, and God is choosing to bring him through this, instead of immediately getting him out of it. All my Christian life, I have witnessed this dilemma…how do we reconcile the power of God and the presence of sustained difficulties? If God wanted, he could make everything easy for us. Every time we had a problem, we say a quick prayer, and PUFF, it’s gone! But, the “difficulties disappearing act” is not reality. Our faith has to mature to enable us to trust in God, even in the presence of lingering trials. I am reading through Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. The Corinthian believers are being influenced by some false “super apostles” who promote themselves and their “great sacrifices”. In countering this, Paul shares a little of his own “credentials” as an Apostle of Christ. When I consider what Paul went through, I think of my own trials and difficulties as quite small. He said, “I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea…” (2 Cor. 11:23b-25). Wow! I wonder how many of us would have said, “God can’t be leading me into this. Look at all the problems!” But, the truth is, you can be right in the middle of God’s will and be facing daunting challenges. Instead of looking at these challenges as reasons to quit, we can see them as reasons to trust God and persevere. And remember, miracles only happen in the midst of trials. As we grow in our faith, we see that problems only serve to push us deeper into the life of Jesus. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16).
