“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Is there a secret to a happy life? Of course, Jesus must be at the center. How can we be blessed, except that we first know Christ and receive his forgiveness? But, there’s so much more than forgiveness and a future in heaven! I have discovered the happiest Christians are those who learn to serve and give of themselves. When I meet a Christian who is moody and mean-spirited, I usually discover someone who is focused on themselves and who rarely serves in any way. A person who truly loves Jesus becomes like Jesus…and Jesus was the supreme giver! The Apostle Paul also loved to give, and spoke at length in 1 and 2 Corinthians addressing the issue of the believers in Corinth preparing and giving a special offering to needy believers in Jerusalem. He said, “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God” (2 Cor. 9:12). As I read the Bible and walk with Jesus each day, I try to see my life as a calling to give, knowing that my giving is only possible because of what God first gives me. When I have the privilege of serving someone in Jesus name, I feel a sweetness in my heart and a recognition of “this is what I was born for!” Please understand, there are many ways to give. Money is just one way. Too many Christians have “opted out” of giving as a life style because they think of themselves as financially poor. However, think of giving as an everyday life opportunity. We can give a smile (no cost there); we can give a family member a hand with a chore; we can give time to notice a child; we can mentor a young person; we can give conversation in getting to know a non-believer; we can give prayer for a fellow believer who is hurting. Our narcissistic world feeds on the bitter fruit of loneliness and broken relationships as people step over others in their pursuit of self-fulfillment. Don’t buy into it. Jesus came to serve, and we can discover the joy of serving in him. Practice being a giver…and Enjoy!
