“Following Jesus and Loving People”

In getting to know someone, you discover over time what they like and what they don’t like. It’s the same way with God. Part of our growth as believers is learning what pleases God and what doesn’t. The Bible clearly reveals attitudes and actions which God hates, and what he loves. Lately, I have been thinking about what the Bible mentions as the thing which God hates most…which is pride. So, I ask myself, if God hates pride so much, what is the opposite of this? To discover and practice what pleases God, means I will live under his blessing and find the joy of living. Therefore, I believe the opposite of pride is being thankful. While pride says, “I don’t need God, thankfulness says, “I need you Lord, and all that I am and have is because of your goodness.” It’s no wonder the giving of thanks is taught so frequently in the Scriptures. Psalm 7:17, for example, says “I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the Lord Most High”. The giving of thanks to God and others crucifies my false illusion of independence and makes me     realize how much I need God and others if I am to accomplish anything  worthwhile. The conscious act of giving thanks to God frees me from any spirit of bitterness and attitude of “entitlement” and enables me to marvel at the grace and mercy freely given by my loving God. When I say thank you to someone else, no matter how small the issue, I am saying to that person, “I affirm you and need you in my life.” In summary, the giving of thanks binds our hearts together in unity with God and with one another. A proud person will not be grateful and a humble person will always be thankful. Choose the “high way” of gratitude!

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
