“Following Jesus and Loving People”

We want life to be easy…good grades without study, finances without work, health without discipline. However, “the way of easy” results in an empty, unproductive life. Who would want to go to a doctor who had easy classes, or trust a soldier who had easy training? “Hard” may not be desirable, but is often the best for us. I was reading John chapter 6 this morning and discovered how Jesus purposely said some hard things. Some people were following him because he multiplied the bread and fish. They thought, “now that Jesus is here, I can have an easy life, no more wondering where my next meal will come from.” But Jesus refused to be the “divine baker”. Instead, he instructed them to “feed on him”, putting fellowship and obedience to him first. He said, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him” (John 6:56). His words were so difficult that many of his followers turned away.  As they left, they mumbled, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it”? In our day of “easy believism” many look at the commands of Jesus like a menu list at Burger King. “I want this, but not that”. I believe Jesus purposely says hard things and allows some hard experiences in order to grow our faith. If our faith is dependent on just blessings and easy experiences, we will walk away disillusioned, just as the “bread line” believers of John six. The Lord is looking for followers who will love and serve him, no matter if life is easy or hard. In the good times, it’s easy to praise the Lord; but it takes faith and perseverance to worship him in the difficult times.  And, let’s remember that the “testing of your faith develops perseverance” (James 1:3b).  May Jesus give us grace to go through the hard places!
