“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Valentine’s may be a man-made tradition, but the truth of love uncovers precious jewels of spiritual truth. After all, the Bible tells us that “God is love.” True love, in all its forms, originates in him and through him. As much as I seek to live by faith and believe what the Word teaches about the love of God, there are times in my life when I just need to sense his love deep in my heart. I remember one particular day several years ago…it was a Wednesday when I was fasting and praying.  A great spiritual battle was raging in my heart.  Thoughts were attacking me like, “You’re not making a difference…you may as well give up” and “Nobody really cares, not even God.” As I was driving along, my heart was crying out to God for grace and mercy. Right there on the highway it was as if heaven opened! His Word from Jeremiah 31:3-4 poured into my spirit. God said, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. I will build you up again and you will be rebuilt…” In the past I have known what it is to rejoice in the Lord, but at that moment I felt as if the Lord was saying, “I am rejoicing over you.” It was hard to keep driving as I felt God had pulled back the curtain a little to show me how intensely he loves me and his people. In our country, I know that most people celebrate Valentine’s Day immersed in thoughts of love between individuals. Of course God created love between one another as well, and this is good. However, human love only goes so far. If we try to build our life on expectations of how others should love us, we will always be victims of disappointment. However, God’s love never fails. He knows us and knows just what we need. His love is not up and down or based on our moods or achievements. He continues to love us…no matter what. The best I can do is live by faith in the One who loves me and commit myself to loving him back. This reciprocal love is demonstrated in our lives by our willingness to obey him, knowing that he is all-wise and knows the best path for us. On this Valentine’s Day, you may look back on your life and consider many times you were let down by others. But, don’t lose your focus! Keep your eyes on Jesus and continue to thank God for his everlasting love. From the strength of God’s love, determine to look for opportunities to love others. I believe this is the secret of experiencing a full and happy life.
