“Following Jesus and Loving People”

How many times have you heard this advice: “Just follow your own heart”? Most people mean by this, “Listen to your own conscience” or “Trust your instincts.” However, there is something fundamentally wrong at the core of this advice. The Bible never tells us to trust our own heart…in fact we are told just the opposite. We are to trust God and what he has spoken and commanded, no matter what our heart says. If we were perfect in wisdom and morals, then trusting ourselves would work. But, something about us is broken. Theologians use the word “fallen”.  In our fallen nature (the “flesh”) we often deceive ourselves and our understanding is darkened. Instead of choosing God’s wisdom, we make decisions based on how we feel at the moment and usually for our own gratification. We pride ourselves in being our own “god” and bristle at the challenge of obeying or following “the God of the Bible”. The tragic consequences of “follow your own heart”  is clearly revealed in the book of Jeremiah. The Israelites, God’s people, gradually turned from reverence and obedience to God, to increasing godlessness. Although many still performed “religious duties”, they were simply going through the motions while persisting in sinful lifestyles. God warned them again and again about the danger of trusting their own hearts. “This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster for you and devising a plan against you. So turn from your evil ways, each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions. But they will reply, ‘It’s no use. We will continue with or own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart’” (Jeremiah 18:11-12). The times are different, but the choice remains the same today…follow the Lord or follow your own stubborn heart. As believers, you and I must take responsibility for the condition of our hearts. May we repent of anything that grieves the Spirit of God, and choose to enthrone Him as the One who is Lord of all life. This beats “follow your own heart” any day!
