“Following Jesus and Loving People”

Just as water needs heat to boil, relationships need love to grow. Without love, friendships and special relationships slip into a lukewarm state, and eventually cool off. It’s no different with our relationship with God. Yesterday, I finished reading the “Song of Songs” (or, Song of Solomon) which eloquently describes the love of a husband and his bride. It is no stretch to apply what is written in these eight chapters to the relationship between our heavenly groom, the Lord Jesus, and his bride, the church. I notice as I read, a progression of the part of the bride, which seems to parallel the Christian’s love toward God. So many new converts are excited about their new-found love with the Lord, and express it somewhat like the bride does in the Song of Songs 2:16, “My lover is mine and I am his…” Many prayers of new converts start with themselves and are focused on what the Lord can do for them (“my lover is mine”). Although this is natural and not a bad thing, our love needs to grow deeper and more mature. Later in 6:3 we see this progression in the bride’s statement, “I am my lover’s and my lover is mine.” Notice the switch (comparing 2:16 with 6:3) in the opening statements of “ownership” from “my lover is mine” to “I am my lover’s”. The wording here is not an accident, but demonstrates the pathway of growth from self-centeredness to Christ-centeredness. Finally, in 7:10 we read, “I belong to my lover, and his desire is for me.” We can feel the fire here! The bride has progressed to the place where she has no fear in giving herself to her heavenly groom, knowing that he is good and desires what is best for her.

As we grow in the Lord, may we rejoice in being able to think less about ourselves and more about Jesus. The discovery that life is not “all about me” frees us to enjoy the greatest relationship with the One who is our destiny. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!
