HIGHWAY TABERNACLE ~ RESURRECTION LIFE

"Following Jesus and Loving People"

David, the shepherd, became king. God gave this special king victories,
peace, wealth, and unity in the kingdom. Most of the other kings in
David's time let success go to their heads. They turned into tyrants and
lived sinful, slothful lives. David was different; he was a man after
God's heart. While enjoying his blessings one day, he asked a question,
"Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show
kindness for Jonathan's sake" (2 Sam. 9:1)? Saul was the king David
replaced (Jonathan was Saul's son), and it was common for the new king
to destroy the old king's family. But, not David…he searched for Saul's
family, not to destroy them, but they he might be a source of blessing
and joy. As it turned out, a son of Jonathan was found, named
Mephibosheth. David overwhelmed the fearful Mephibosheth with kindness
by giving him the estate of Saul and by inviting him to always dine at
the table of the king and his family! What a picture of amazing grace!
As we enter our special time of the year we call "missions convention",
there are some insights we can learn from King David about missions.
First, David realized that what he had been given needed to be shared.
God has given us the blessings of Jesus and eternal life, not just so we
can enjoy them, but for us spread the wealth of the "Good News". Like
David, we can get up in the morning, look around, and ask, "who can I
bless today by showing the kindness and love of God?" Another insight
into David's heart is that he was willing to seek after Mephibosheth. As
it turns out, Mephibosheth had moved far away into another country. To
find him meant someone had to travel far and at great expense to bring
him back. David was willing to do this because of love. In the mission
of Jesus, he asks us to be willing to make sacrifices in order to share
his love with others. Most people are far away from the blessing of the
kingdom and need someone who will seek after them with the Good News.
Will we answer the call? He may not send us across the world, but across
the street. We will need to show great patience and be willing to pray
often for that person. But in the end, the blessings will far outweigh
any sacrifice. May the Lord lead us into acts of love in order to see
others experience the overflow of God's blessing into their lives. Like
David, be blessed…and bless others!
