“Following Jesus and Loving People”

When I preached the message last week from Proverbs on the power of words, I wish there had been more time to share. Here is another outstanding word of wisdom from Solomon: “He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends” (Proverbs 17:9). This verse is especially important if we value healthy relationships. As we interact with  family and friends, it is inevitable that we will sometimes offend one another. The key is to have discernment in knowing what to address and what to let go. In most cases, we just need to let the matter drop. Just forgive the person and go on. This covering over of the offense is an act of love. You love them enough  not to start WWIII over some small issue. Peter says the same thing: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins” (I Peter 4:8). In other cases, however, if the offense creates a “wall of distance,” you need to go to the other person and work it out (see Matthew 18:15-17). You go to them, not to accuse or blame, but because you love them and don’t want any bad feelings getting in the way of your relationship. It takes courage to confront, but this is absolutely necessary if you want to grow closer to one another. The greatest “friendship crasher” is to repeat the issue to others. Slander and gossip may appear to make you look better at first, but in the end everybody loses. May our Lord give us grace and discernment to use our words to build up others and develop genuine and healthy relationships. Love finds a way!
