“Following Jesus and Loving People”

There is a question which I have struggled with ever since I began in ministry. It is, “How do people grow?” From God’s Word, I discover that he created all living things to grow. For me, to follow Jesus as one of his disciples (the word disciple means learner) requires that I face the “classroom” of daily life with a good attitude…a willingness to keep learning and growing. I was reminded of this attitude when reading this morning from the Book of Hebrews. The writer penned a stinging rebuke to those who were “skipping class”. He said, “Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!” (Heb. 5:12-13). As a Pastor, I have watched some Christians take off like a rocket and make great progress, and I have watched others who seem to never get out of kindergarten. What makes the difference? The answer is found in what Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” You can go to the best seminar and have the greatest teachers, but it won’t do you any good if you are not hungry for what they are sharing. A hunger for truth drives you forward because you see your need of God. Here at Highway and Resurrection Life, we as leaders want to provide what you need to grow in the Lord. Services, Bible studies, events, outreaches, and fellowships are created to help you make progress in the faith. It is not expected you should come to everything offered. However, if you avail yourself of little or nothing, it would be right to ask yourself, “Am I really hungry for God?” “Do I believe what he has said in his Word?” An honest self-assessment helps us to create and chart good change. My reason for writing this challenge to you today is so you can experience the joy which comes from a healthy hunger for God. Having a good attitude and hunger to know the Lord and do his will enables you to declare, “I know why I am alive!”
