“Following Jesus and Loving People”

I believe Evangelist David Abraham came to our churches last week in the timing of God. His message made me think about a number of issues and challenged me to consider how I live every day. Let me tell you what God impressed on my heart. First, David quoted a passage from Ephesians 4:11-12 which speaks of what Christ, the ascended Lord, accomplished. “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” The Evangelist reminded us that a growing church is one where each person sees the opportunity of ministry every day out in the marketplace. It is not the “job” of the pastor alone to reach out to the community. As a pastor, I want to reach others, but, even more, I want to be an “instrument” to help sharpen and motivate you to do what only you can do. David shared many personal examples of sharing Jesus with others and offering prayer for their needs. God loves it when we exercise faith and offer his love to others. Since we are only in a church building for a few hours, the greatest opportunity to see God move is during the rest of the week! Let’s not limit God to a building. The Lord can also help us get over our “inferiority complex” which says, “God can’t use me  because I’m not good enough (or smart enough, or old enough…etc.).” All through the Bible we see a perfect God who delights in working through imperfect people. The second thing I will remember from what David preached was his  emphasis on trusting the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is here and now, not just then and there. If we are willing to “take a risk” and step out, we will see God do more than we have experienced in the past. Because Jesus is our Shepherd, we can expect that he speaks to us and will lead us in a specific path to specific   people. I pray that your life would be an adventure of faith as you look for opportunities to follow Jesus and love others!
