“Following Jesus and Loving People”

“You want me to do what?” The assignment for Moses seemed so extreme that God sent an angel in a burning bush to deliver the message. After forty years as an “anonymous” shepherd, Moses was called to go back to Egypt and free the Israelites. As I read this story, I realized the biggest hurdle for Moses was not physical, but spiritual. Moses was filled with doubt and fear because his eyes were on Moses. After God challenged him with the task, Moses answered, “who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:11). Moses was both right and wrong. For sure, he could not accomplish this on his own. However, he underestimated God. The Lord answered Moses, not by disclaiming Moses’ inability, but by refocusing Moses on His presence and power. “And God said, ‘I will be with you’” (v. 12).

This exchange between God and Moses reveals something important for you. God has a task for you in life and you can’t do this in your own strength. As long as your eyes are just on you, you will feel helpless and anxious. However, if you are willing to do God’s will, He will help you accomplish your life mission. He doesn’t call you to failure or to do something which could never happen. The only appropriate response to the call of God is faith and obedience. Even as we realize our own limitations, we can look past them to the Lord’s power and grace. With him, we can do what he calls us to do. It will take time and there will be some scary moments, but doing the will of God is all that really matters. This is the “great adventure”. Moses faced his fears, refused to stay in the “comfort” of the desert, and stepped out with God. “The One who calls you is faithful and he will do it” (1 Thess. 5:24). What about you?
